A house for Hope
What an exciting way to end the year. Eleven-year-old Hope is an extraordinary girl. Her reason for wanting a playhouse included things like a private place where she could be alone and somewhere she could hang out with her friends, but she also wanted a place where she could be inspired, and a place she could concentrate on her artwork. So the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Texas Plains took on the challenge. And a challenge it was. A wish of this magnitude might have been considered out of reach because of budget concerns. However, this small obstacle was one our volunteers ignored. They believed a community like ours would rise to the occasion. And they were right!
Thanks to numerous business and individuals in Amarillo and Canyon, Hope’s house was built in six weeks. A local high school students, under the instruction of Danny Davis donated all the labor, Canyon Drive Lumber discounted the building materials and Golden Spread Redi-Mix poured a concrete slab free of charge. Contributors to this project included: Acme Brick, Rod Bowers Construction, Jenkins Doors and Windows, Lavin & Associates, Jack Thomas Paint, Nunn Electric, Paul Blake Roofing, and Carpet World. All of these donors’ services and materials were in-kind gifts.
Also of special note was a complimentary meal for Hope and her family from Barnaby’s Beanery of Amarillo, complete with a limo ride provided by Sky Limousine. Two surprises also awaited Hope at the unveiling of her playhouse: a custom stained-glass front door created and donated by Arvis Stewart and a gift certificate, compliments of Hobby Lobby so that Hope could begin to create magnificent art work right away in her new playhouse.
Mom, Alecia, reports that Hope is “recovering in style” in her new playhouse and that it is an “amazing blessing!”
